How does concept-based learning help develop a child?

concept based curriculum and instruction

Children are global thinkers but often find it difficult to encounter certain concepts that are not directly applicable to their lives. And learning concepts that lie outside the tone of the child’s psyche could be a challenge to grasp. While knowing a concept can enable better understanding of the basic aspects and allow easy application in real life situations, children who can draw concepts to their real life experiences are generally known to perform better in class. A basic example would be how a child can see color patterns in beads and relate it to a natural pattern on butterflies.

It is essential that our children grow into thinkers and problem solvers, instead of just memorizers of specifics. They need to develop big ideas that can take them through their lives. Concept based curriculum and instruction, moving beyond the pages, help achieve those ideas and independent life qualities. Therefore, concept based learning is advantageous for children in the following ways –

  • It encourages them to think at preeminent levels
  • It focuses on problems across categories
  • It facilitates collaborative, therefore active learning
  • It provisions systematic observations about conditions
  • It meets the requirements of diverse learners
  • It emphasizes on relationships among events and conditions
  • It prepares learners for professional success from an early age

Application of Concept based education –

While several aspects and concepts of the conceptual learning method can be infused into different types of education models, even the traditional content-laden ones, the lessons in such concept-based curriculums actually focus on ‘concepts’ themselves.

Hence, when schooling in a concept-based curriculum, the faculty is less concerned about covering everything and centers more on providing an in-depth guidance to students. When our children are trained to learn by using this method of concept based curriculum and instruction, they:

  • Identify, learn and understand rather than just memorize and learn by heart.
  • Learn to master ideas and facts for longer by understanding the really meaningful parts behind them.
  • Learn to create connections between subjects like Mathematics, Science, Arts and Social Studies by recognizing the importance of certain things that tie them up to match to real life situations.
  • Establish methods to deal with knowledge and effective skills that may become available in the future.

At its heart, this concept of education works surrounded by global contexts that eases an increased understanding of language and culture in students. Concept-driven education, cultivates effective approaches to teaching as well as learning, empowering your children for a lifetime of learning, preparing them to be a part of a community of learners that take part in global challenges through action, inquiry and thinking.
